"The Mason House Inn Of Bentonsport Is Nestled On The Banks Of The Des Moines River In Bentonsport, Iowa. A Century Old Iron Bridge Is Within View Of The Inn. Ruins Of Old Mills Are Located Along The River. The Greef General Store, Housed In An 1840S Building Next Door, Offers Antiques, Local Handmade Crafts, Artwork, Gifts And A Museum. The Bentonsport Riverside County Park Is One Half Mile From The Inn. This Federal Style Home Was Originally Built In 1846 As A Hotel For Steamboat Travelers Going From St. Louis To Des Moines. During The Civil War, The Hotel Was Used As A ""Holding Hospital"" For Wounded Soldiers Waiting For The Train Or Boats To Take Them To The Hospital In Keokuk, Iowa. It Was Also A Station On The Underground Railroad. In 1956, The New Owners Bought The Old Train Station And Connected It To The House. The Current Owners Refurbished The Building To Provide Ground Level Accommodations With Separate Entrances. Complimentary Country Breakfasts Are Served In The 40 Foot Dining Room In The Main House Each Morning. The Bed And Breakfast Showcases An Eight Foot Walnut Recitation Bench From A Nearby Schoolhouse And An 1875 Map Of Van Buren County. A 1905 Kimball Piano Is Featured In The Parlor. Pets Are Not Allowed At The Property. Guestrooms At The Mason House Inn Of Bentonsport Offer Private Bathrooms, And Feature Period Antiques And Furnishings.
