Sacramento now outranks Paris, France for the most trees per capita of any major city in the world. In the spring you can see the blossoming camellia trees of brilliant pink, white or red that surround the Capitol building in an amazing display of color. Take a FREE tour of the California State Capitol Museum, located at Capitol Building 10th and L Streets. Open daily except major holidays. STANFORD MANSION The Victorian era Leland Stanford Mansion, after a 14 year, $22 million restoration and rehabilitation, is now open to the public. The Mansion serves as the States official address for diplomatic and business receptions as well as offering public tours as a California State Historic Park. Built between 1856 and 1872, the four story, 19,000 square foot Mansion has special historical and architectural significance. It served as the office of three governors during Californias early years: Leland Stanford, Fredrick Low and Henry Haight. It was also the site of Californias first presidential visit by Rutherford B. Hayes and General Sherman in 1880. The Mansion was acquired by California State Parks in 1978. CROCKER ART MUSEUM The long awaited and highly anticipated opening of the Crocker Art Museum 125,000 sq. ft. expansion took place on 10/10/10. The 125 year old world class museum will feature a new contemporary design, tripling the amount of space. The Crocker Museum will now be able to display more of its 14,000 permanent works of art, many of which have never been on public view. Founded in the 1870s, Crocker Art Museum is known as the first art museum in the West. The historical building with hand carved doors, ornate walls and parquet floors, creates a gorgeous backdrop as impressive as the art. The art includes the Gold Rush, Victorian and European masters and contemporary works. The museum hosts art talks, classical concerts, jazz concerts, and tours (afternoons and weekends). A gift shop is also available. GOVERNOR'S HISTORIC MANSION As a historic house museum, the Mansion is unusual because it is not a replica or a restoration. It stands much as it did when vacated by the Reagans in 1967. Visitors walk through the accumulated history of the house seeing the furnishings and personal items left by each first family, including the Pardees' 1902 Steinway Piano, the purple velvet sofa and chairs purchased by Minnie Johnson in 1911, hand tied Persian carpets acquired by Nina Warren, and an early 1950s console TV added by the Knights. Today's guests see marble fireplaces from Italy, gold framed mirrors from France, and exquisitely handcrafted hinges and doorknobs, all of which are reminders of the Gallatins and the Victorian era. Outside some of the Mansion's abundant vegetation includes flowers, shrubs, and trees dating back to 1877. But when visitors look behind the grape stake fence and see Governor Brown's swimming pool built in 1959, they are reminded that the Governor's Mansion State Historic Park is really a walk through time. CALIFORNIA STATE MUSEUM The California Museum opened in 1998 and was initially designed to showcase the materials of the State Archives. Over the last ten years, the vision and mission have grown to make the Museum a premier destination place with a goal of educating and inspiring people about the richness that is California history. SUTTER'S FORT In 1839 a Swiss immigrant named John Sutter received a land grant in the Sacramento Valley from the Mexican government. He used the land to create a flourishing agricultural empire and named it New Helvetia (New Switzerland.) This empire established Sacramento's earliest settlement and the first non Indian settlement in California's Central Valley. In 1847 Sutter sent aid to the Donner Party, a group of immigrants trapped in a winter storm in the Sierra nevada Mountains. Word spread and Sutter became known for his hospitality and for providing temporary refuge to travelers. This reputation made New Helvetia the destination for early immigrants to California. CAVIAR The white sturgeon produces caviar comparable in quality to Beluga, Sevruga and Osetra caviar from the Caspian Sea, served in dewy piles in Russia, along with blini and ice cold vodka. Traditionally, the Caspian Sea produced 99 percent of the worlds caviar, but pollution, political upheaval and poaching decimated the sturgeons numbers there, giving Sacramento more than a toehold in the world market. Sacramento County is actually the caviar capital of the world, said Dr. David Stephen, who manages one of Tsar Nicoulais Caviar sturgeon farms. GINGER ELIZABETH CHOCOLATES Dessert Professional named this Sacramento Chocolatier as one of the 10 best chocolatiers in the United States! It's not cheap tasting chocolate, but divine REAL chocolates you would want to bring home with you! CAFE ROLLE FRENCH CAFE Enjoy pates, smoked fish, sandwiches, salads, quiche, tarts, cakes, crème brulee, mousse chocolat and other unique deli items. You can ride a horse drawn carriage, buy your sweetheart an old fashioned ice cream treat, dine and enjoy hand crafted beers from a micro brewery, shop for souvenirs and feel the gold rush through your veins as you tour the various haunts where miners once ate, drank and slept. UNDERGROUND TOUR Old Sacramento has the distinction of being the only city in California to raise its streets and interest is high in the new offering, additional tours have been added to meet demand. The entertaining and history rich "Old Sacramento Underground" tours will provide visitors with a unique glimpse into the massive and dramatic undertaking that took place when the streets were painstakingly raised in the 1860s through the 1870s to protect the city from devastating flooding. Underground tour visitors will have the opportunity to view disappearing windows and doors, dipping alleyways, exposed retaining walls, walk into underground hollow sidewalks and tour historic buildings all while being entertained and educated by tour guides and docents who portray characters true to the period. JAZZ FESTIVAL Sacramento is home to one of the largest jazz festivals, held usually in May, miles of bike trails, river ways, golf courses, museums, a beautiful convention center and mountains and wineries nearby. GOLD RUSH DAYS Sacramentos Gold Rush heritage springs to life Labor Day Weekend at the annual Gold Rush Days event. Old Sacramento is transformed into 1849 when everyone had gold fever. Enjoy Pony Express re enactments, Wild West shoot outs, gold panning, 1850s games, and an authentic miners camp. SACRAMENTO HISTORIC CEMETERY The Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1845 through a land donation from city founder and cemetery resident John Sutter. Along with Sutter, many other notable internments include E.B. Crocker (lawyer and art collector), Mark Hopkins (one of the "Big Four" railroad magnets), William Stephen Hamilton (son of U.S. Treasurer Alexander Hamilton) and other noted elected officials for the City of Sacramento and the State of California.
