Pets, children, historians, and re-enactors are most welcome.Clipp's Mill: A Two-Bedroom Log Cabin Next to a Grain MillClipp's Mill is located in the historic town of Sharpsburg. It is close enough to Antietam Battlefield that a house across the street has cannon ball damage. Clipp's Mill itself was built in 1924 to serve the local community. It was last used in the late 1960s. It is a three-story structure with most of the original machinery still inside. The mill was originally powered by a steam engine, and it was converted to electricity in the mid 1930s. One central motor drove the machinery through a system of belts. Eventually, we hope to restore the mill itself.When Clipp's Mill was built, it incorporated an older log structure dating from the 19th century. This log building was built for industrial purposes, possibly an earlier mill, and it became the office for the 1924 mill. We have restored the log building as a cabin. Additional rustic sleeping spaces are in the mill itself.The cabin at Clipp's Mill features:Two small bedrooms (One with a queen-sized bed; One with a single bed and a full-sized bed)An antique kitchenA full bath with washer/dryerHeating and air conditioningThe Wash House: A Cozy One-Bedroom Log CabinThe Wash House was originally built as an outbuilding in Keedysville, Maryland. The owner wanted it torn down. We obliged him, moved it log by log to Sharpsburg, and rebuilt it behind Clipp's Mill using the original materials. The half-story upstairs, which is reached by the original steep corner stairway now serves as the bedroom. We have built a shed extension on the rear to house the kitchen and bathroom. The Wash House is positioned as an out building (along with a barn, chicken house, and corn crib) behind Clipp's Mill, another of our Rustic Retreats. Over time, we plan to recreate the type of kitchen garden and small farm yard that a typical Sharpsburg house would have had a century ago.The Wash House is an ideal relaxed, romantic get-away for a couple. It is close enough to Antietam Battlefield that a house across the street has cannon ball damage. Sharpsburg is close to South Mountain and the Potomac River in beautiful rolling countryside that can be explored by car, by bicycle, or on foot.The Wash House features:One bedroom with a queen-sized bed, as well as a single sofa-bed downstairsA fully equipped kitchenA full bath with a claw-foot bathtubHeating and air conditioningHowserz Misteke: A Three-Bedroom Log HouseHowserz Misteke is located in Keedysville, Maryland, and is one of the earliest homes in the area. We took the name from an old deed, on which each word is spelled at least two ways. It was originally built as a one and a half story log house, but the roof was later raised to a full two stories. A post and beam extension on the back is as old as the log house itself. There is also a walk-out stone cellar. The house has undergone many changes, the most extensive renovation being about 1917. The original cooking fireplace in the cellar apparently smoked badly, and at some point it was decommissioned and the chimney was dismantled. The house has served many functions, including a store. In the last 20 or 30 years, it fell into serious disrepair, and we were only just able to save it.
